Drake “In My Feelings” Commentary

We at Upspoken and the rest of America (maybe the world) just can’t get over the Shiggy Challenge that has taken over social media. The challenge uses Drake’s new song, “In My Feelings” as a tune to step to. It’s great, honestly.

But here at Upspoken we won’t let the Shiggy Challenge distract us from the on-point love and relationship messages Aubrey “Drake” Graham dropped in his new song! Read the lyrics to the chorus below and we’ll talk some more sis.

Kiki, do you love me? Are you riding?
Say you’ll never ever leave from beside me
‘Cause I want ya, and I need ya
And I’m down for you always
KB, do you love me? Are you riding?
Say you’ll never ever leave from beside me
‘Cause I want ya, and I need ya
And I’m down for you always

Now that you’ve read the lyrics that have been stuck in our heads for weeks, let’s break this down.

As Black women we’ve heard it enough times. The question “Are you a rider?” Or you might get “Are you about to be my ride or die chick?”

Regardless, often times in relationships we as women are asked to carry a load that our partners are not ready to share. And it leaves us asking where are our ride or die fellas? Who is riding with and for us?

Drake, that’s who! We are living for and loving his new song In My Feelings. He says, “’Cause I want ya, and I need ya. And I’m down for you always.” Ladies, this that mutual respect we need and deserve in relationships – someone who is down for us always and not just asking us to ride or die for nothing.

Too often the burden of supporting each other and the relationship is put on the backs of us women. And sis, we know you already have enough to carry. But this time around, Drake says he has got us too. And that is just one more reason why we sistas can’t get enough of Drake!
