Upspoken Women We’d Spend Galentines With

Friendship

Every year, Valentine’s Day rolls around and we can’t seem to escape the typical heart decor, teddy bears, and chocolate boxes that pop up outta nowhere. For us single ladies this can spark increased awareness of our singleness and for those of us with a boo, we may feel intense pressure to plan the most romantic night EVER (which never lives up to expectations).

This Valentine’s Day, Upspoken is proposing 💍 a different celebration, one that celebrates the dope women in our life. Because let’s be honest, friendships are the best kind of ships. Regardless of our relationship status, our sistas show up when we need them and usually with a bottle of bubbles to pop.

In celebration of sisterhood, love, and Black History Month, we’re sharing the women (past and present) who get a seat at our Galentine’s Day table. Share yours in the comments below!

Rihanna
Not only can we raid this mogul’s closet and makeup drawer (Fenty #450 pls), RiRi would give us that first listen to R9 because that’s the type of sis she is! If we’re lucky she might also pour out some tips on launching our own business empire.

Audre Lorde
With the constant attacks on Black womanhood today, we need Audre to come through with that Feminist theory realness! From intersectionality to the resistance, Audre Lorde would lead a much-needed discussion on the power of sisterhood.

Christina Rice
As the founder of Omnoire, an online social wellness community for women of color, we imagine Christina would set the vibe of the night by leading us in sun salutation and meditation. She would also treat us to her favorite green smoothies, leaving us refreshed and revived at the end of the night!

I did. And I’m better for it. Find your happy and make a choice to pursue it, fight for it. #atlanta 📷: @thejourdanchataun

Madam C.J. Walker
An entrepreneur, philanthropist, political and social activist, Madam C.J. Walker would bring invaluable wisdom to our dinner discussion and with the help of her hair care products (the ones that helped her become one of the first American woman self-made millionaire) get all them edges laid.

Happy Galentine’s Day from your sistas at Upspoken!
