The Silver Fox Sex-Positive Guide

Last month, we discussed the importance of being an Upspoken Sex-Positive Woman. Now, we are showing love to our Silver Foxes and encouraging them to feel empowered to own their evolving sexuality and prioritize their sexual health. Our culture conflates aging with decreased sexual appetite and prowess and the conversation about sex-positivity often excludes older women. At Upspoken, we know the tea and are destigmatizing the conversation. Check out some tips on prioritizing sexual health and wellness for the queens of a particular age below!

Your body is changing. As our bodies age, they experience a lot of changes. Menopause, being one of the more obvious changes, has numerous implications for women’s sexual health and sex life – it triggers a decrease in estrogen levels, reduces anticipation of orgasms, and changes sexual desire. Our culture does little to reassure older women that they are still attractive. We’re here to remind you that you are. The advantage of time is that you’ve grown to become the expert on you. Inform yourself about your changing sexual needs, and play around with what works for you and your body.

It’s never too late to speak up for your needs. It’s important to cultivate healthy communication in any relationship. As women, we can be guilty of putting everyone else’s needs above our own. As our bodies age, the way in which we can be sexually pleasured changes, don’t be afraid to speak up and prioritize your changing sexual needs. Whether that means an increased libido or changes in vaginal lubrication, make sure to communicate with your partner on how those changes will implicate your sex life. Maybe that means incorporating lubricant jelly or deferring to clitoral stimulation instead of vaginal penetration. Discover what works best for you and your partner.

Continue to get tested. It’s recommended that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 gets tested for HIV at least once a year as a part of routine health care. However, this doesn’t excuse our 65+ women. Don’t rule yourself out of HIV testing just because of your age. Take care of yourself and ask your doctor or clinician for comprehensive blood tests to ensure you’re being screened for infections, viruses, etc.

Sex positivity is about embracing your sexuality, whatever that means for you. Upspoken wants you to be equipped with the tools you need to do so. Safe and loving sex is a healthy and natural human experience that women of all ages should feel empowered to express in whatever way they choose. We are celebrating and affirming those who approach sexuality in ways that may not be like our own, whether it be celibacy, BDSM, polyamory, or others. How we choose to express our sexuality is our choice. By embracing sex-positivity we can have productive conversations about what good sex looks like for everyone of all ages.
