The Song of Summer 2018

If you haven’t heard this song … you are missing out! Released last year, Ella Mai’s Boo’d Up hit number one on the Adult R&B chart and made waves on the Billboard charts this year. 🙌🏾

And I see why! Mai’s sultry voice paired with Boo’d Up’s heavy hitting R&B beats and melody… girl… this song is giving me so much life! Especially when the success of this summer jam has given the world just one more reason to believe in the unshakeable, incomparable, #BlackGirlMagic.

Now, besides being THE LITERAL JAM, Ella Mai’s Boo’d Up goes further and talks about that feeling we all know in some way or another… being in love. Mai starts the song saying, “Feelings, so deep in my feelings.” And I know what she is talking about: that deep feeling of love. It can be all-consuming, and it can be difficult to find the perfect way to describe it, but it can be so strong and so good.

From the highest of highs come the lowest of lows when dealing with love. Yet, I wouldn’t trade the feeling of being in love just to have never felt the pain on the other side of it. Love touches you deeply and imprints on your being for the better. Even in my longest relationship, riddled with aspects of a harmful co-dependency, I learned to overcome the pain and I know I’m better because the experience.

I learned who I am and who I don’t want to be. Through romantic love and loss, I found self-love that makes my heart pitter patter just as deeply; like Ella Mai says in Boo’d up, “Hear my heart go ba-dum, boo’d up Biddy-da-dum it just won’t stop, it go.”

This song and what it inspires for me is all about the inner feelings of love. As a single woman I equate those feelings to self-love. For me it’s a feeling of sheer joy that no one can take away from me when I am loving deeply. And whether loving someone else or loving ourselves, Mai reminds us of how love can make us feel, while providing us with what should be titled the song of summer 2018.

Now, y’all tell me: Have you had that feeling? If you’ve been deeply in love, including with yourself, let us know in the comments below.
